The ladies from Portland’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls have certainly had an eventful year. March saw the release of Girls Rock! The Movie, a documentary following four campers from Portland’s annual rock camp. The film was instrumental in bringing attention to rock camps around the country, as well the virtues of these programs. But why stop there? This time around they’ve literally written the book. Today kicks off their tour to promote Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls: How to Start a Band, Write Songs, Record an Album, and Rock Out! The book brings you the camp’s best tips for everything from setting up a P.A. to considering your image and you can read a great review of it from GR!C workshop veterans, Venus Zine.

Please join us next week when we welcome three wonderful women from Portland’s long running camp to Chicago: Portland RnRC4G Program Director and drum instructor sts, Invincible Summer author and zinester Nicole Georges, and Dear Nora musician Katy Davidson. The event will feature readings from the book, live advice, visual art, and music, plus a performance by Girls! Rock Chicago camper band, MACE.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls Book Tour
7:00 pm
Wednesday, November 5
Women & Children First
5233 N. Clark
FREE!

Representatives of Girls Rock! Chicago will also be on hand to answer any questions about our program. We hope to see you at this fun, family event.

The Girls Rock! Chicago board would like to thank everyone who made the 2008 summer camp and End-of-Camp Extravaganza concert a huge success. We would especially like to thank:

Each and every one of our amazing campers and their families

Our incredibly selfless camp staff of over 60 camp-week volunteers

The workshop leaders, musicians, and bands who took time out of their busy schedules to participate at camp

Each of the amazing businesses that supported us with financial, edible, and audible donations

Inter-American Magnet School, Metro Chicago, and Experimental Sound Studio, who provided facilities for camp week

Everyone who came out to see the girls rock the Metro at the End-of-Camp Extravaganza concert

Visit our Thank You to our Supporters page for a complete list of the many organizations that were instrumental in making camp a reality this year.

Please stay tuned for GR!C fund-raising (and just plain fun) events this fall and winter, and help us spread the word to guarantee an even better camp in 2009! To receive notification of our upcoming events, subscribe to our email newsletter.
